Uniform

Blazer days, sports days, and the Friday rule for pre-scholars.

Uniform implementation guide

Uniform at Harmony Junior School is part of the academic order of the week. It tells a child, and the adult waiting at the gate, what kind of day it is. The corporate colours of the school are turquoise blue, grey, and white. The formal uniform carries the crest. Sports days change the clothes, not the standard.

The guide below is the one published by the school. Please follow it for the day named. If a child arrives in the wrong kit, the day is harder for the child and for the class.

Blazer days

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are formal uniform days for the junior school. The blazer is worn with the school uniform. Friday is the same formal uniform for every learner who is not a pre-scholar. Pre-scholars are the exception, and only on Friday: they wear home clothes that day.

A blazer day is a classroom day in the full sense. Shoes, socks, shirts, ties or dresses, and the blazer should all be the school items, clean and complete before the child leaves home. The first bell is at 8:00, so the uniform needs to be ready before the gates have been open for long. Gates open at 7:00.

Sports days

Tuesday and Thursday are sports attire. On Tuesday the sports kit is a tracksuit, or white shorts with the house T-shirt. On Thursday the sports kit is a tracksuit, or white shorts with the golf T-shirt. The two days are not interchangeable. A house shirt on Thursday, or a golf shirt on Tuesday, is not the published uniform.

Sports attire is still school attire. It is not a free-dress day. Children should come ready to move, with the correct shirt for that day, and with every item named.

Pre-scholars on Friday

Pre-scholars wear home clothes on Friday only. The rest of the week they follow the same guide as the school: blazer uniform on Monday and Wednesday, sports attire on Tuesday and Thursday. Home clothes on Friday should still be clothes a child can play and learn in, and they should be named, just as the uniform is named.

The distinction exists so families of the youngest children know Friday is different, and so the rest of the school does not treat Friday as a home-clothes day. If you are unsure whether your child is in the pre-scholar group for this rule, ask the administration office before the Friday in question. The office is at the administration building, and the phone is 077 690 8490.

Name every item

Children are sometimes forgetful. The school asks parents to name all of their children’s uniforms and items so that anything misplaced can be identified and returned. That includes blazers, shirts, dresses, shorts, house T-shirts, golf T-shirts, tracksuits, socks, shoes, hats, and bags.

A name written inside a collar is the difference between a garment that finds its owner and a garment that sits in a pile. Please use a form of the child’s name that the teachers already know. Check the name still reads after washing. At the end of a sports day, look through the bag before you leave the grounds, because Tuesday and Thursday move more clothing in and out of the classroom than a blazer day does.

Keeping the standard

Pride in Excellence is the motto on the crest. Uniform is one of the ways that motto is visible from the gate. A complete kit, the right kit for the day, and a name in every item is the parents’ share of that standard. The school’s share is to teach in it, from the first bell at 8:00 until the last bell at 3:30.

Questions about a missing item, a size, or which Friday rule applies to your child go to the administration office: [email protected] or [email protected], and 077 690 8490.
