An afternoon that belongs to the children
Pizza Day at Harmony Junior School is a favourite afternoon together. The photographs show the children indoors, at tables, in a group large enough to fill the room. It is not a lesson with a worksheet. It is the school choosing, on purpose, to sit its learners down for a shared meal that is different from the Monday rice or the Tuesday pasta. The ordinary lunch is the kitchen’s weekly work, described on the meals page. Pizza Day is the occasion beside that work.
The school takes pride in exposure beyond the intellectual. A shared table is part of that exposure. Children practise waiting, sharing, and being in a room that is still school even though the food is a treat. The adults who teach them on blazer days are the adults responsible for them on this afternoon. The bells do not disappear because the menu has changed. If the afternoon runs past the ordinary last bell of 3:30, the office tells families. Until it does, 3:30 remains the time a child who is not on a special arrangement is collected or placed on the bus.
What the photographs show
One photograph is the room itself: children together indoors. The other is the group. Neither picture is a restaurant. The setting is the school. That matters for parents who want to know whether Pizza Day is an outing. The published images are of the children at school, at tables. If a particular year takes the day off the grounds, that would be a transport arrangement — the school’s own minibuses, experienced drivers — and it would be announced. It is not what these photographs record.
The school has not published a standing date, a price, or a rule that every class eats the same number of slices. This page will not invent them. What families can rely on is the character of the day: it is theirs, it is together, and it is Harmony. Children who cannot eat the food, or who need a different plate for a medical reason, should already be known to the office from the note you sent about school meals. A celebration day is the wrong moment to mention an allergy for the first time. Write to [email protected] or [email protected] before the day, with the child’s name and class.
How to get ready for it
Wear what the office asks. If no special dress is announced, the uniform of that weekday stands: blazer uniform on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; sports attire on Tuesday and Thursday; home clothes on Friday only for pre-scholars. Do not send a costume unless the note says so. Name the jersey. Send the child in the morning as on any other day, ready for a 7:00 gate and an 8:00 bell, because Pizza Day does not cancel the morning.
Talk about the day as school, not as a holiday from manners. The values on the admissions page — excellence, integrity, hard work, and the success of each child — are not put away with the exercise books. A child who can share a table is a child the mission statement can recognise. Pride in Excellence includes the way a treat is received.
Asking about the next one
The date of the next Pizza Day is held by the administration, not by this page. Call 077 690 8490 or write to the office. The school is at 31949, Mabvazuva, Ruwa, Harare. The other reports in this section are Africa Day and the choir. The programme that sits behind them is extra curriculars.
